Hell, the grave, the lake of fire and eternal punishment. What does the Bible have to say about these things. Many words are translated differently in different places, so the ability to quickly discern what is being talked about is hindered. What follows is a look at the words in Hebrew and Greek which are used in various ways to discuss the fact of a place where beings are confined and places which are contrasted with heaven.

In the future I will discuss how all these fit in time and place but for now just a repository of scripture on the subject which will be added to from time to time

Hell

G86 Hades

Matt 11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell(hades): also Luke 10:15

Acts 2:27 (quoted from psalms); Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell (hades) delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell (hades) were cast into the lake of fire. Matt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell (hades) shall not prevail against it.

Luke 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell (hades) he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

The Pit (Sometimes Sheol, others not)

Num 16:30 But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.

31 And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them: 32 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. 33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. 34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also. 35 And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.
